Location: Chelmsford, Essex
Service: Block Paving Driveway
Project Duration: 5 Days
Completed: September 2024
Project Overview
This beautiful family home in Chelmsford needed a complete driveway transformation. The existing concrete surface had deteriorated over the years, with multiple cracks and uneven areas that detracted from the property’s kerb appeal. The homeowners wanted a stylish, durable solution that would complement their Victorian property whilst providing ample parking space for two vehicles.
We designed and installed a stunning herringbone pattern block paving driveway using a blend of traditional red and charcoal blocks. The combination creates a classic yet distinctive appearance that perfectly suits the period property. A charcoal border frames the entire driveway, adding definition and visual interest.
The Challenge
The original driveway had significant drainage issues, with water pooling near the garage entrance during heavy rainfall. The existing base had also started to subside in several areas, creating trip hazards and an uneven driving surface. We needed to address these structural problems whilst creating a beautiful new surface that would last for decades.
Additionally, the narrow access to the property required careful planning and coordination to bring in equipment and materials without disrupting the neighbours or damaging surrounding areas.
Our Solution
Complete Excavation and Preparation
We removed the old concrete surface and excavated to a depth of 250mm, ensuring adequate space for a robust foundation. The area was carefully graded to create proper drainage falls away from the property.
Solid Foundation
A 150mm layer of Type 1 MOT hardcore was installed and thoroughly compacted using a heavy vibrating roller. This created a stable, load-bearing base that prevents future subsidence.
Improved Drainage
We installed a new linear drainage channel along the garage entrance to effectively manage surface water. This ensures the driveway remains free from standing water, even during Essex’s heaviest downpours.
Precision Block Laying
Our craftsmen meticulously laid each block in a herringbone pattern, maintaining consistent spacing and perfect alignment throughout. The contrasting charcoal border was carefully integrated to create crisp, professional lines.
Professional Finishing
Kiln-dried jointing sand was brushed into all gaps and the entire surface was compacted with a vibrating plate compactor. This locked the blocks together, creating a unified, stable surface ready for immediate use.
